Grades 3/4: Flying Squirrels vs. St John 4 33-17
The Flying Squirrels capped off their undefeated season with a strong victory over St. John 4, 33-17, to take the Grade 3/4 Division title. According to Coach Murray, each of his Flying Squirrels did a great job honing their individual skills over the course of the season, and some of his boys made very noticeable strides. More importantly, they learned how to play better as a team. This required a lot of unselfishness, and resulted in games where every player was able to be a meaningful contributor to the team's overall success. Coach Murray also reported that the boys had a lot of fun cheering one another on. The motto of the team is "Fly, Flying Squirrels, Fly!", and from start to finish, this team certainly flew high this season!
No coach expressed more pride in his team than did Coach Conroy of Tenacious D, which capped off an undefeated season with a 34-25 victory over St. John 6 for the Grade 5/6 A Division title. According to Coach Conroy, St. John has become a strong rival for Tenacious D, which completed its championship season with book-end victories over its talented rival. Tenacious D certainly lived up to its name all season long, as it finished as the top defensive team in its division, in addition to being the top scoring team as well. This was one tough, sorry, tenacious, team on both sides of the court!
The champion of the Grade 5/6 B Division completed its successful season through a journey of self-improvement, both as individuals and as a team. According to Coach Alvarez, Team Tidal Wave's tough fought 29-24 final’s victory over Team Newberry was the result of everyone working hard together and leveraging each other's strengths. In addition to improving as a team fundamentally, toughness also played a role in Team Tidal Wave's championship as several players played through injuries throughout the playoffs. A .500 team as the playoffs approached, Coach Alvarez feels that everything came together leading up to and culminating in the final game, as individual players learned from their mistakes and played to their strengths as a team. Team Tidal Wave views their success as being more than just taking home the trophy, but also the fact that they learned a lot about basketball and themselves. This tidal wave certainly picked up strength at the right time!
Nova Cavs started off strong right out of the gate, and began the season as a very fast-paced team. They never looked back and their undefeated season culminated in a hard fought 38-33 championship victory in the Grade 7/8 A Division, over season-long rival Team Chambers, whose three losses to Nova Cavs were that team's only losses for the season. Coach Young of Nova Cavs expressed his gratitude and appreciation for all his opponents, but in particular for Team Chambers, as all three games between the two teams, including the championship, were closely contested and helped improve his players, both as individuals and as a team. Coach Young felt that his team grew a lot as the season progressed, and by season's end Nova Cavs were playing with a lot more confidence and playing team-oriented basketball. Their confidence and their teamwork were certainly on display for all of their opponents!
Resilience defined the Playmakers from the start of the season, which didn't start off on the best foot. Or rather, it didn't start off on the best arm, as their starting center broke his arm before games even began. The team was also only able to have one practice during the first three weeks of the season, contributing to an 0-3 start. But according to Coach Altman, the team stayed focused and bought into a defensive-minded, unselfish approach and ended the season with a six-game winning streak! It seemed that each week it was someone different who stepped up, be it to score, rebound, get a steal, or make a needed assist. Even the parent got into it with their never ending help at practice. This resiliency and teamwork ended in a convincing win in the Grade 7/8 B Division finals over Team Perez by a score of 50-21. The Playmakers certainly learned how to make plays, and took home the hardware as a result!
The Cheese Demons 49-19 victory over Triple B in the Grade 9/10 Division championship capped off an undefeated season. And while their opponent in the championship game was only able to field a team of four players, it didn't take away from the successful season of the Cheese Demons. Most of their games were never in doubt, as they finished as both the highest scoring team and the best defensive team in the division. From top to bottom they were one dominant team!
